Have you heard of the movie Rain Man? This 10 minute clip is about Kim Peek, the man who inspired the film.
Sadly, Kim passed away from a heart attack in December 2009.
Extra credit opportunity: Comment on this post and answer the following questions.
1. What does Kim's retention of long numbers show you about his short-term, or working, memory?
2. What types of memories did Kim make most easily?
3. What does Kim show us about the limitations of intelligence testing?
4. How do you think Kim's encoding skills differed compared to those of "normal" people?

Kim Peek: The real rain man was amazing and suprising.
ReplyDeleteKim's working memory is making a deep process with the numbers being adressed to him making it easier for him to retrive the numbers.
The memories that Kim made were long term beacuse he would be able to recall anything that he had already with out having any misattribution.
Intelligence testing are not always the best to test someone's intelligence. They don't always show the speacial skills others have.
Kim's encoding skills are differnet from "normal" people beacause it would be harder for him to encode. When he was trying to make the shape in the testing he took a long time and showed complications. While we would be able to form the shape becasue of our encoding.
1. Kim's retention of long numbers show us about short term. In the video it showed how Kim was able to retrieve long numbers sometimes even more than 7 digits. He was also able to retrieve them backwards.
ReplyDelete2. Kim's memories that were more easily to remember were numbers, and dates.
3. When Kim took his intelligence test it really did not show anything which connects to when Simon and Binet test's how they designed a test to identify those with remedial help.
4. Kim's encoding skills are different compared to those of normal people, because it would be harder for Kim to store or recall the information. In the video when Dr. Jeramy was showing KIm the shapes she stated he had difficulties with task that require new thinking in which he could not call upon his memory.
